Weather in Tanzania

The weather in Tanzania is one of the key factors that makes the country a year-round travel destination. Blessed with diverse landscapes, from the sweeping plains of the Serengeti to the tropical beaches of Zanzibar and the towering heights of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania’s climate varies depending on the region and season. Generally, Tanzania experiences a tropical climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year, making it perfect for safaris, beach holidays, and mountain adventures.

Tanzania has two main rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The long rains usually occur from March to May, bringing heavy showers that turn the landscapes lush and green. The short rains arrive around November and December, often lighter and more scattered, creating excellent conditions for wildlife viewing. The long dry season, stretching from June to October, is the most popular time for safaris in Tanzania.

During these months, the weather is sunny, skies are clear, and wildlife congregates around waterholes, providing some of the best game viewing experiences in the world. January and February mark a short dry period, also ideal for exploring the national parks or relaxing on the Zanzibar beaches.

In coastal areas such as Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, the weather is hot and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F). Inland regions, including Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire, tend to be slightly cooler, especially in the mornings and evenings. If you are planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, temperatures drop significantly at higher altitudes, and climbers should prepare for freezing conditions near the summit.

For safari travelers, the dry season from June to October is considered the best time to visit Tanzania, especially to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti and the dense wildlife populations in Ngorongoro Crater. However, the green season after the rains also has its charm, offering fewer crowds, lower prices, and stunning landscapes filled with birdlife.

No matter when you visit, the weather in Tanzania offers something special every month of the year. Whether you are seeking thrilling wildlife encounters, cultural experiences, or a tropical escape on the Indian Ocean coastline, Tanzania’s climate ensures that there is always a perfect time to travel.
